Can You Hear Me Now Kehl Brings Intelligible Speech to Central LutheranStepping up to the pulpit microphone of the new sound system, the church council president asked, “Can you hear me now?”. The congregation's affirmative replywas mixed with joyful smiles. It was the dedication ceremony for the long awaited sound system renovation, part of a capital project successfully aimed at improving speech intelligibility in the sanctuary. The new sound system designed by KehlAssociates provided greatly improved intelligibility and three-channel (Left-Center-Right) music reinforcement for all 2,400 seats. The system was designed based on computer models constructed by KehlAssociates. Robert Kehl, founder, is one of the earliest adopters of computermodeling software for loudspeaker array design. He has been using computersimulation software in his design routine since its inception in May of 1983. Computer modeling allows experienced sound designers to select and test the best and most cost effective means of proving intelligible sound coverage. The computer models were constructed based on extensive acoustical testing in the sanctuary performed by Kehl Associates. Various loudspeaker designs were modeled and tested for intelligibility within the model. The best solutions were selected for implementation into the project. The selected speech system utilizes a specially engineered central loudspeakercluster in conjunction with a series of custom designed under-pew loudspeakers. The music system uses three small loudspeaker clusters and a system of compact ceiling loudspeakers. A large sub-woofer system is located in the ancillary pipechambers.Kehl Associates recommended a new sound booth be constructed in the rearbalcony. Three rows of pews were removed and a new concrete floor poured for the new sound booth. The new control console located in the sound booth wascustom designed to match the existing mill-work.The system includes all-digital electronic signal processing and a new Yamahadigital mic mixer. The digital mixer allows microphone level presets for varioustypes of services.
